Hi there, the guy who owns the stables where I have my horse (he is not horsey at all) keeps on dumping grass cuttings in the fields where the horses graze. I have told him politely about this but he thinks I am making a fuss saying that once they have rotted/gone black they will be OK. I caught one of the horses eating this disgusting stuff and am worried about botulism as I understand there is a risk from this. Could you please tell him how dangerous these cuttings are. At the moment we are both trying to prove a point, me keeping the horses out of the fields where they are and him dumping them and just ignoring my concerns.

Hi-you must stop him doing it immediately!! I've included a link for you to look at which says how dangerous it is for horses to eat grass cuttings as they cause colic. They also have a poster you can download.

If he won't stop dumping the grass then your only other option is to fence off that area to prevent your horses going to that area. Best wishes HorseVet
