my fell mare has been seen eating bindweed, i think she has done it for quite a while as i dindn't really se the plant in the long grass, a week after my mate caught her eating it she has become a nutter! she jogs sideways gallps off if you dont hold her and is quite uncontrollerble at times and for a 25 yr old fell wh has arthritis bad in her hind legs i think this is amazing! but a friend said she found out that bindweed can cause hallucinations if so would this cause the mad behaviour? and what can i do for her if anything?

Hi vesophie. I haven't heard anything about hallucinations but it can definitely cause stomach pain/colic. It is really hard to get rid of, you have to cover it to stop the light getting to it and spray it with a herbicide especially for bindweed just after full bloom. If you just pull it out they reappear a week later! I would imagine the only thing you can do is keep her away from the field with bindweed or section it off until you get rid of it and see if her behaviour improves as I would imagine if it has had any effects these will hopefully wear off. Sorry couldn't be more help.x
