Britain has been battered by some really strong winds recently. Do you have any stories to tell? How did you and your horses cope? Did you learn anything or have you any advice you'd like to share? http://www.perthshireadvertiser.co.uk/perthshire-news/local-news-perthshire/perthshire/2012/01/06/horse-killed-in-tuesday-morning-storm-73103-30067412/ |

I actully live in canada, but we also had really high winds!(blew some trees down, half of a really big building roof off) My horse isnt at all spooky at wind or rain, but if its a bright sunny fall day w/ leaves on the ground.... he thinks somthing going to pop up out of every pile! Even if he walks by the same pile every day!

Was a nightmare- as the stud farm is right on top of the Yorkshire Wolds! All the thoroughbreds were kicking up a fuss, the muck never reached the muck heap, the outdoor arena was a NO-GO zone and everyone took to galloping full hilt round the paddocks, the wind up their tails! And to top it off, I was told I was to show a horse to a prospective owner on the worst windy day of them all- thankfully she phoned and postponed because of the weather, I don't know what I would have done! It's bin hell :S we've even got a horse called Windy!!!! (Thoroughwind) pic below x

I live in the US, and we had high wind like, last week, and my horse was unphased... but my roomates horse was freaking out. He's also a green 6 year old :) Jamaica's reached her peak and she's seen it all. I don't think I could name one thing she shys from :) All the other horses in the barn were freaking out though, which raised her alarm a bit. My advice is get your horses used to everything as little ones! It helps down the road! And as a rider, expect the worst, and have the same prey animal brain as your horse it helps! |

I had an absolout nightmare on my hands! Sheridon is spooky at the best of times and through those high winds it was like he thought the world was ending! Every bush that rustled contained a tiger, every branch on the floor was going to jump up and eat him and the very sight of the puddles rippling with the wind made him stop back up then give a small rear and spin -_- My lord I don't know how I coped! We had a few more rears recently, apparently bits of branch in the road are more terrifying now than they were before. I saw a guy riding out ahead of us and because everything is so scary we had to run to catch up with the other horse which in turn meant I was riding beside a guy I didn't know :/ His horse was fine, mine? Well he really did look like a CRAZZZZY thoroughbred.
\/ Actually looking rather calm before we went out.

noneotherthan01 , it's easy to say that you should bombproof your horse while they're young- you seem to have an amazing horse!- but these horses are rescue racehorses. There's nothing we can do to change their past and little we can do about their thoroughbred characteristics! Was a good experience for them, they need to learn not to be so silly, learn to be like your fabulous mare! x |

We had a few spooky horses at our yard but other than full pelt galloping around the fields they were all reasonably calm! Polly is what i would say a bombproof horse is and even she had a slight spook while she was in a different stable whilst i was mucking out! I hate the wind so think i was worse than them haha :P |

it was so funny ;) it was a really windy day and it took me a while to get grens fleecy exercise sheet to stay on and we went for a hack and we passed a girl on a heavyweight cob going sideways and usually spooky grenville soldiered on calm as anything, even when the horses in the field we passed galloped about like loonys obviously scared by the wind he still carried on without fault :) i realise on days like that just how far we have come from that rearing crazy horse that nearly killed me to a reliable horse i can trust |

we had 102mph winds here in Edinburgh...pony couldn't care less! But horses were kept in due to the trees around the fields looking a little bit scary. But no, my pony couldn't care less about the wind, I can ride him in any winds that won't blow me off :D |
