My little pony is 15 years old and doesnt really have any spacial awareness. Shes not bad when ridden but on the ground she tends to rush through gateways and pull where she wants to go, even with a bridle on she is strong and on the ground i cant always hold her, she never runs off its just wandering around and i dont want to pull her mouth out! She has her teeth checked regularly and they're fine and she has a fairly sensitive mouth when being ridden!I was wondering if there was any techniques i could use to help! thanks |

Funny you should say 'she' as both my mare's have been bargy in the past and will always test me! You're right to want to sort this out as it can be really dangerous especially the rushing through gateways. I've learnt that I have to be quite a bit of a control freak whenever I'm on the ground with them and insist they move where I want, when I want and at the speed I want. I do get lazy about it though and let a few things pass but it doesn't take long for them to start trying to push me around again! So first you have to set the ground rules and then stick to them. I'd go into the school and work on simple stuff, asking her to come forward when you ask and not walk past you, move back, move over and if you don't get a response you have to add a bit more pressure and be really firm about it. You need to use a lot of energy as Mare's can be very dominant. Have you done much groundwork? |

No not really i have had her for 4 years and when i was younger i didnt really think about schooling and manners i thought she was a ready made pony and i didnt have to do anything but get on and ride but now im older im more interested in these things like schooling and i notice her habits more! But thanks i will try your techniques, i think it is a mare thing, they will try their luck on most things and sometimes i am lazy too and laugh it off when shes silly but when you have other people around your pony who arent horsey you realise how dangerous it could be if they got in the way! Thankyou! :) |
