Ok there is some debate about grenvilles colour and i thought i would consult my trot on friends about what they define as brown or bay. Well first i had someone say he is black which he isn't! He has brown points and is just quite dark. Now i have always called him dark bay but his passport says dark bay/brown and thinking about it he has brown in his mane and tail so does that mean he is brown and not dark bay?! Lol its not important just confusing and everyone keeps arguing with me about it -.- its like shush i don't care but actually i kind of do hence me asking hahaha

Hi :) I'm something of a horse colour enthusiast (I like to study their genetics) but so far as what you can tell from what you see (i.e. his phenotype) I'd say he was bay/dark bay rather than brown. I've read that bay horses are supposed to have "true black" manes and tails but the more important part is the fact that he quite clearly has black points - i.e. his muzzle, legs and I presume the tips of his ears should all be black. The kicker for me is the black muzzle. I'm also not sure that brown is really a colour of horse. You have bays, liver chestnut, seal brown and black. Browns would most likely I think be extremely dark liver chestnuts.

He is a very pretty boy but we don't tell him incase he gets 'pretty man' syndrome as seen in people haha ;) i just find it funny when people say he is black! I would love a jet black horse but he is clearly not black :P i am usually good with colours but he has gingery tips on his mane and tail so i was getting a tad confused lol he seems to be getting lighter with age too :)

Hi, I would say dark bay. My pony is described as brown on her passport, she is much darker than Grenville. I think of her as being black but if I look closely she isn't quite black, that's probably why she was called Pepsi as is almost the colour of coke.

you can see where the light hits her that she isn't a true black :) i like horses that look so dark they are pressumed black but in the sun look brown :) the horse i used to ride occasionally at the riding school called 'black bob' was not black but a very very very dark bay, he only looked a very dark brown in mid summer :P

Dark Bay... Browns have brown manes and tails, generally matching the coat color. He seems like textbook definition of a dark bay to me... I've seen a lot of dark bays and he deff looks like one! This is a brown... notice the color is generally solid (minus the dappling)... there's no black/brown contrast. A dark bay is generally a dark brown with lighter brown legs, flanks, muzzle, eyes... actually, getting a better look at him he may just be a regular bay... he doesn't seem to have real prominent light spots, he just seems to be dark.

It seems we've come to the conclusion that your beautiful horse is indeed dark bay! ;) I just wanted to pop a post of my own in here to say the mare I work with (the one written about in my Seat Profile), Cindy, is almost exactly the same shades of bay as your Grenville and we've decided she's dark bay (I haven't examined her passport!) Here's a photo. As you can see, she is almost exactly the same colour as Grenville, with her black appearance, her bay touches and her black nose. Like your horse, she has a pretty much black mane, but with brown tips if left to grow a little longer. Hope my post was interesting x
