Horses may once again be butchered for human consumption in the US after Congress lifted a ban which had meant the closure of horse slaughterhouses. Those who are pro horse slaughter say that the ban led to an increase in neglect and the abandonment of horses. Also the ban didn't stop some owners sending their horses for slaughter but they had to face a long journey to a slaughterhouse in Canada or Mexico instead. However those who are anti believe that once slaughterhouses open, owners will take their unwanted animals there instead of looking for alternatives, such as animal sanctuaries. Animal rights groups also argue that the process of slaughtering is cruel, and responsible owners should have their horses put to sleep by a veterinarian. There are strong feelings on both sides of the argument. What do you think about horses being sold for meat?

Right i am in two minds. In one sence i think it is bad we see horse slaughter as disgusting yet eat cows on a daily basis, but then again horse slaughter is inhumane, if it was done the way organic reputable slaughter houses and farms slaughter i wouldn't be so against it, it is how they are treat that upsets me the most. I think it should stay banned because of how they treat horses going for slaughter but i also think slaughter rules for all animals should be tightened and be much more strict, like halal meat! That is a very contraversal subject and to me that is cruel, i suppose it depends as what you see to be cruel, i see fox hunting as cruel, others don't... Everyone has different perceptions.

is it right we care enough to help horses and try to stop horse slaughter yet we give little thought to where our beef comes from, chances are if it is on offer in tesco then you will buy it but the cheaper the meat the worse it will have been treat

Agree Jess! It's mainly to do with cultures, like most meat eaters in the UK would initially think it was barbaric to eat cats and dogs, yet it's the norm in some Eastern cultures. In that respect I'd say 'well why not horse meat too, why not any other meat?' As for the slaughter, it's needed only if for a short period of time(so long as strict breeding laws come into effect). There are simply too many neglected/suffering or turned-away domestic horses from the owners not affording them during the recessions and they don't know how to cope in the 'wild' let alone those turned away in the middle of cities! There aren't enough people doing the amazing work that of HorseWorld Trust are doing. The majority of anti-slaughter protesters won't take in a neglect case to try and help the situation while thousands upon thousands of domestic horses are left neglected and suffering through what people have done to them, or not done for them as the case may be.

Another about horses being sold for meat...if they were raised as stock for food then why not as any other livestock animal. As for years old, domesticated, ridden, I'd say no as for the simple reason of possible medical treatments they may have had that's still lurking in the body(I'm no scientist forgive me :P).

I agree, i think it is fine to breed any animal for slaughter IF it is done in a humane and healthy way, for example cows that are born and raised in a field and then killed humanely compared to veal where the calf is taken straight from its mum into a crate. Horse slaughter, dog and cat slaughter at the moment is very cruel and inhumane but if the standards are raised high like it has for other livestock then why not? After all horses were first domesticated for food thousands of years ago. And as for the medication on but it says 'horses that have ever been fed this can never be sent for slaughter' thats not the only reason i dont like tha horses bred for riding going for slaughter, it is like they trust us big time as humans to look after them and it is moraley wrong but a horse bred for meat purposefully would probably have little trust and contact with humans, much like pigs and cows used for meat, so that makes it ok in my eyes... Hope this makes sense lol

I agree with the moral issue of them putting trust into humans, I just thought I'd throw out the solid scientific reason not to, instead of ramble on. :P
