On 2 sponsored rides in the past 2 months, since living alone after the death of her elderly gelding companion, Sky has 'turned on' a gelding that she'd just met. When we've been hacking alongside, or nearby. Both times she suddenly swizzled round & went to kick them. On a 3rd occasion someone rode rapidly up behind us on a narrow path, 'asking' for it rather. Happily she hasn't made contact. The last time, yesterday, I'd been riding behind, & chatting to, 2 people I didn't know, friends, on a mare & a gelding who obviously knew each other. Evidently there had been some 'negative chemistry' that the rider of the gelding had noticed between Sky & her gelding. She then fell off (not my doing, honestly!) & while her friend was trying to reunite her with her horse Sky did her 'whip round & try to kick it' routine. I politely made my excuses & after checking they were ok with my doing so, went on solo. Can anyone enlighten me as to the reasons for Sky's behaviour? I hack out with a friend on a gelding sometimes & she's not done it then. Apart from a red ribbon, are there any other tips that anyone who's had a horse that does this can give me? I've never had anything like this before, it comes out of the blue with no warning & I'm desperately keen not to risk injury to another horse/person. |

Is it likely to get better when she's no longer solo? |
