Ok so I currently have a horse on loan but unfortunately he's cut his back leg in the field after the hunt was out(My guess is he was charging around and got clumsy) Anyway he's healing up pretty quickly and it isn't anything serious but he is still quite sore and stiff. I don't plan on doing anything with him until hes completely fine but I was wondering about free lunging him once he's healed. I know how to lunge on a line but he doesn't do very well i.e. bucks, rears, charges around and such which I don't really fancy dealing with. I was wondering is free lunging would be any better to get him back into work and such. I'm not to keen on getting on his back after so many weeks of not being worked at all so I'm hoping I could get some energy out of him. I also heard that lunging can be good for the relationship between horse and rider, a friend told me that its good for a horse to join up with you after you've sent him around the arena. Whats your opinion? should I go for it or will I get run over? He's naturally quite genuine and has a loverly temperment. He hasn't got a nasty bone in his body but he is a thoroughbred and can get quite springy and such. Please can I have your opinions? I would love to try it out :) (Here's my beautiful boy and my rathy scruffy self)

(sorry about my terrible spelling) as i have only done free lundgeing a few times wich was rather tiering i have to say. |

Well I'd love to do a mix of both, but I suppose at this current moment I'd be going for free lundgeing since I want to work some energy out of him. Trust me I will not be doing this on my own haha, I'll most likely bring down my friend laura (My old riding instructor) |

Free lunging would be best for if you mainly want to get some energy out of him and check how he's working, his paces etc.. join up is much more bonding work as its getting you to be seen as the 'herd leader'. I used it breaking in a young pony :) I used to free lunge the thoroughbred I used to loan - he could also be very on his toes and it's a great way to get them to loosen up and work in trot and canter safely! I hope everything goes well for you! |

hmm yeh i did free luindgeing a few times with my first pony on loan, and dont really i am trying to get my youngster to now, its easier as she falls in alot on the line, annoying, but i cant free lunge as she isnt scared of anything or that, though she respects enough. |
