"Skye & Lilly’s French Gymkhana" (link below) is the first of a series of animal / pony adventure stories, written by Andrea M Hale of Millfields Rare Breeds in Essex. The stories are inspired by the real life characters who live at the Rare Breed Centre; Skye, a 9 yr old Welsh Mountain Pony, and Lilly, the matriarch of our Hebridean flock - pictures below. Millfields was featured on BBC Countryfile in Feb 2011 because of their conservation project for the critically endangered Boreray Sheep breed. The children's books will hopefully support the ongoing conservation of these native rare breeds.
The main character of the children’s books is Skye – a little welsh mountain pony. Skye is a Welsh Section A Mare - the smallest of the Welsh Pony Breeds, but she has the heart and character of a lion. Her best friend, Lilly, is a rare breed Hebridean sheep with big black horns and lots of attitude. The unlikely best friends regularly join forces to win rosettes at gymkhana competitions but their skills are really put to the test in this thrilling adventure. Their friendship and trust of each other become vital as they face kidnap, smugglers and a daring rescue!
