Hey Guys!
Do you think that breed prejudices exist in equestrian circles
? Some stereotypes that I have heard seem to circulate with some frequency. I do not believe the ones I am going to list, but have you heard these?
Arabian people are "out there." Arabians are insane.
Appaloosa's are for people who can't afford anything else.
Hunt seat, jumpers, and dressage people are stuck up and only ride warmbloods.
Race track people are mean to their horses.
QH people are ignorant/close minded.
TB people are all single women who are using their horses for love.
Draft people don't know much about equitation.
I know these are insane but I seriously hear them in some shape or form. Have you heard of these or any others? Any national prejudices? Do you think any truth exists within these beliefs?

I think TB's are stereotyped as crazy hot heads, not a first horse, worthless blah blah blah lol people definately judge but as for the appaloosa thing! That can't be right, i have seen them sell for over £4000, they are very desirable, too much for me to afford thats for certain lol. Also i get alot of people from america say english people can't ride and we are stupid, english is easier than western... All that kind of thing yet england do well in the equestrian competing world. It is wrong to judge in such ways but it is human nature, be it one of our less attractive traits

I agree! In Canada I like to feel that our style of riding is more like the english and not so much american, at least thats the way I have always been taught. I love my TB and other Warmbloods. Just because they are built to do dressage and hunter jumper. They can be very wild when they are younger, but you work through it...I feel buy the horse for what it is built for and for what it loves to do.

I've never heard the appaloosa stereotype. For a decent foal you're looking to pay anything around £2000 up lol. Then with the breed you may have more medical issues to worry about, which we all know that comes with a price lol.

I fall into the dressage people only ride warmbloods stereotype, guilty as charged. Had to laugh about single women and TB, a very single friend has three!!!

Is it different on opposite sides of the Atlantic about Appaloosas? In the uk they are still fairly uncommon, hence expensive!! maybe in the US/Canada they are common & cheaper then most! Arab 'people' is a definite stereotype over here, (Nutty? a bit fey? not Real Horse People?) tho' since the popularity of Endurance went up that has changed it a bit. Hasten to say I don't subscribe to that view of Arab owners lol!

See if i was going to do dressage higher than me and grenville having a go at a few prelim (since he really can't do much more with his arthritis etc) i would get a friesian (as most of you know lol) and i really really wanted a cob when i was looking for a horse and i HATE TB's lmao and look what i got ;). Not too keen on the other TB's on the yard though and there are lots of them! I like my horses chunky and grenville is a well filled TB, he looks more warmblood at times when he is going nice (or so i have been told)... Stereotypes aren't a good thing ;) good thing i don't really fit the stereotype :P

I know some people call warmbloods dumb bloods. I haven't known enough of them but they are definitely different to TB's-there's a resistance in them, a blocking out sometimes which I find hard to describe. I think TB's are very sensitive and actually much less highly strung then some of the TBX I have had. A friend of mine worked with racing arabs-she was a real TB girl and not an arab fan at but she said she became a real convert. I've definitely heard people say that Anglo Arabs are nutty. They say Exmoor and Dartmoor ponies are very stubborn and Welsh Section A's can be a bit too firey for a lot of kids. I've definitely found the latter to be true. And what about colour prejudice-do Chestnuts live up to their name for being hotheaded and difficult. I have a chestnut mare but think she is very sweet-of course she has her moments but my bright bay mare has more!!

I have always wanted to try an Arab because a lot of people in the states are against them and say they are unreasonable and too hot to get along with. I wanted to see if it was true and if I could handle them. Also, have you heard of the American Saddlebred Horse? Over here they are known as INSANE! I really would like to find out more about that as well.

You might find this video What is a Saddlebred interesting-they definitely don't agree with the Insane stereotype! Slight side track-who is Paul Ravere? I'm sure he was mentioned in the Patti Smith book I'm reading-or maybe I'm going fruitloop?!
