Callie our sport horse mare came up with this a couple of months ago, at times the whole back leg looks like its going to burst way up above her hock, she has a foal at foot and is infoal...She's walked and hosed 3/4 times a day more if we can [you can see the enzymes bubbling off her leg when she's hosed] only to find her the next day stuck on the spot not able to move, she lives out 24/7.. she's had a few rounds of antibiotic shots and bute, it's beginning to look bleak...a friend of ours took her mare to a witchdoctor she was also infoal [last resort] I'm not to sure what happened I think there was a bit of bleeding done and cutting of mane chanting and buried some hair of the horse, she did get 8mnths of relief but sadly it came back after she foaled and had to be put to sleep, I know it will never leave Callie but I was hoping we could control it, I've looked it up and the end result seems to be always [euthanasia]...has anybody else tried a witchdoctor...

One of my RDA horses had lymphangitis a few years ago. What i noticed as a bit puffy in his fetlock at 2pm became swollen by 5pm, gave bute & penicillin &, as you say, was ready to burst by 9pm. Murphys case doesnt sound as bad as Callie's, he had a course of penicillin which didnt help much so he then had a course of gentamiacin (spelling???), was on bute all thru & of course was being walked & hosed several times a day. Im not sure which bit helped but somewhere along the swelling reduced enough that he could walk comfortably tho he was still noticably swollen & had an altered gait. On vet advice we put him back into RDA lessons on a limited workload just to keep him moving, some days were better than others but unfortunately we had to retire him after 6mths. I dont think I have anything helpful to say as everything that helped me you're already doing. I havnt tried a witch doctor but as far as natural remedies go Id be asking Flicka which herbs & therapies work best for kickstarting the lymphatic system, Ive heard both Equine Touch & Bowen can be good. I hope things improve soon xx

Yes I definitely recommend Equine Touch, it really helps with lymph drainage and when Farlow had a swollen hock I fed him a lot of what we call'sticky willy'-the curse of most gardeners lol!! I also massaged aloe gel containing some peppermint essential oil into the area. I'll try and look into it a bit more and hopefully you'll get some more advice. There are a couple of really good ET practitioners in Ireland-Heather McReynolds being one of them.

Thanks Flicka ...Callies holding her own at the moment, swelling has gone down from the hock up, below the hock is bad ..she's had her last shot of penicillin, thats why it's gone down we can't keep pumping her with shots..I had to wash the leg with washing up liquid to get all the greasy enzyme residue off it's like candle wax ..and would you believe the strapping pad has come in really handy for massaging ..It's been great physio for my left arm as well ....

Callie is back in exercise [ridden] I'm not sure if this is good for her but the swelling has stayed down from the hock up ..fetlock is'nt good..I'm just hoping that the swelling has stayed down because of the exercise and not the penicillin, well it's a week since the last shot so time will tell ..I just hope we are doing the right thing for her ..
