I found my perfect horse & would love to buy him but he failed his vetting because of sercoids. My vet thinks he is likely to develop further sercoids & advised me not to buy. I would love to hear from anyone with any experience with this topic.... thanks |

Hi, I bought a horse that had sarcoids, only because the vet either didnt see them or didnt think they were something that should have been reported to me on the certificate which he gave saying nothing to report!! But when the mare arrived it was obvious and one was on her girth and after clipping out there was evidence of lots that had been treated and some coming up too! I was gutted I had had swabs and photos taken and sent to Liverpool who are the experts. I read all the literature on them and they are a type of cancer, but in some cases they dont return when treated, but these had. My friend has recently had to have her mare put down cos of them so, if you dont want a huge vet bill & u cant afford to keep the horse when it cannot be used as this can be oftenwhilst treating, then I would advise to stay clear! |

So asong as you know what they are and the best way to treat it think about the gwtting the horse |

I would listen to your vet. There are plenty of horses out there. I would hold out for one that is not going to cost you an arm and a leg.

Thanks everyone - i guess I know this was the answer I was going to get but I can't help myself falling in love with him& then can't make rational decisions!!
The owner has given him to me on loan to get him fit & I am trying xxterra herbal to see if it has any results....

We've used xxterra and had good results, our stallion had a sarcoid on his tummy quite nasty large and dangly, vet tied it off first then we had to paste xxterra on the site of sarcoid only not on the healthy flesh for 6 days, we put vaseline around the sarcoid edge first, first 2 days were easy then it got quite difficult as he was in pain, but it dropped off a few weeks later, we recently used it on our TB but only for 3 days and the sarcoids are falling off,she had 3 nodular ones, so easy to treat..to my horror in the summer my mare Diamond developed them, 3 big nodular ones, I called the vet and she found quite a few small ones aswell..the vet applied some solution to all the sarcoids, she wouldn't even let us near it, she said she got it in the UK, didn't get the name, this was 3 months ago, all her sarcoids dropped off, took quite a while to die, I'd say thats not much help as I didn't get the name...To be honest I wouldn't buy a horse with sarcoids, it's a huge problem if they develope where any tack has to sit. |

Thanks Rahara - Lately I have read a good bit about sarcoids & have come to the decision not to buy. There is no point in asking for trouble.... My search goes on. I used to think it would be fun horse shopping - boy do I know better now ;-0

It's a difficult one isn't it. My friend had a bay who had sarcoids-she treated them with human wart stuff and rubber bands. However he was a fantastic show jumper and I'm sure she never regrets buying him. He's retired now and in his twenties. Unfortunately he's started to get sarcoids in his mouth so eventually they will be the end of him. However you know there are lots of other equine ailments that could have got him first, such as colic. I think the really caustic cream people have mentioned that the vet has to administer is Liverpool Cream? I have had friends use herbal, homeopathic remedies and found them successful. I will make a note of the herbal cream that a few of you have mentioned. It seems all sarcoids are different so one approach doesn't suit all. Hopefully some good research is being done and they will come up with an answer soon. Good luck Maria100 finding your horse-yep buying a good horse certainly isn't easy!! |

LoL Flicka, I was going to say she got it in Liverpool, I knew Liverpool was mentioned..Maria100...its worth knowing about these conditions you can still buy and they develope, I've just noticed Diamond has something lumpy on her back so this could be the start of another one..also I bought Diamond knowing she had a curb, I was told that she would never be any good for jumping at the moment she's doing 1.20 and would go higher if I was any good, but I have noticed as she's got older the twist in her back leg has got more noticable, what the outcome is I don't know...she's a mad mare I just fell in love with her and had to have her.. |

I'm back to give ye an update... used the xxterra cream on one big sarcoid on his neck - 4 days on 4 days off 4 days on again. After the 3rd day it was getting sore when I touched it he wasn't happy. it changed in shape & became enlarged after about 10 days. then the unbelievable happened it fell off 2 days ago after I washed it.....
Now I'm really confused again - LOVE this horse, just did my first dressage test on him yesterday & had a ball
Somebody tell me again not to buy PLEASE
