Well a couple of years ago my beautiful Pony ended up getting really itchy heels and cuts etc, alot like mud fever, greasy heel, or harvest mites! We never actually found out what it was but we Hibiscrubbed it daily and put a barrier cream on and trimmed her feathers and made her bed ALOT thinner. It has come back this year and we are doing everything the same and it is clearing up, I just wanted to know if anyone knew of anything that would help ease the itching because i am now concerned shes going to injure her legs because where she scratches she kicks her leg around the cannon bone area! And shes wearing shoes so don't want her doing herself more damage! Open to any ideas :)

have you tried udder cream? heard it is supposed to be really soothing, also you could try some creams meant for easing the itching of fly bites but i reckon it would sooth pollys heels just as well :)

I second using udder cream - it's really cheap from any farm suppliers and great as a hand/foot cream (I always have a tub on the go).

I've had the same problem for years. My horse would be driven nuts by this and end up chewing his heels, (front and back feet!!), because they itched so much. I found that I could break the cycle by regular removal of feathers, bathing the leg from the knee/hock down with an insecticidal shampoo, removal of any scabs and then painting on of a wonderful thing I found at my local saddlery called Heavy Horse Leg Oil. Its fantastic. It contains sulpher, so stops the itching cycle. As long as I did this weekly for, say, four/five weeks, the whole thing stopped. The scabs disappeared, he stopped chewing and his lower legs are beautifully silky. All I do now is keep the feathers clipped off.
