This is such a horrible story-it made me wonder if there are many more cases like this where gypsies try and kill unwanted horses and ponies, although I'd rather not think about it :( Three cheers though to the man who tried in vain, to save the pony. http://tinyurl.com/6dn3e7f |

I heard about this :( i really do think that regulations should be placed about gypsies owning horses, they shouldn't be allowed, alot of them are good to the horses but all too often the horses are malnurished and tormented when they are tied to sides of roads by locals. I think if you own a horse it has to be a stable environment where they can settle in quiet not tied at a busy road side, i see too many neglected horses tied to the sides of the road i put pics of one in another topic that we reported and i know gypsies that do look after their horses very very well, they are in a field that is open to the puplic away from the road tied to a very large bucket of water that is regularly changed but i have seen them ride to the pub, leave the horse out side tied to a tree and the horse gets harrassed by the drunken men and women! Once a foal got loose on the estate i used to live on (it was a horrible area) and it was tormented before being dragged back to the field by its ear, this isn't the gypsies fault but i can't help think this wouldn't have happened if the horse wasn't tied up somewhere unsafe. And i definately want to drown the people who did this :\ makes my blood boil i swear if i saw someone hurt a animal i would loose it and probably end up in jail :| |

There are some witnesses saying that they thought it could have been an accident(see link)....but still, they were responsible for pushing the pony too far if this is the case :( I don't think you can condemn all gypsies Jess. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-14109244 |

Like i said its not all but to me it is most, i have never had a plesant experience seeing gypsies and horses. Each time some sort of abuse is taking place, mild or servere. There are lots of gypsy horses where i live and only 2 of them are well looked after but this is a minority and i don't think most of the gypsies realise they are being cruel, one family has stables and a caravan on a concrete square of land (not very big) but there is no grass and the horses spend most of their day in the concrete yard with no hay or water, now i think they don't mean to be cruel but in my eyes it is, also i once saw a horse running along a railway line after breaking free from its tether! I just think there should be rules for keeping horses for everyone, i bet if i kept grenville in my back garden where there is little grass i would get pulled up about it but with the horses in the concrete yard noting is done about it because the horses are healthy? To me this doesn't make sense, at college we are taught the 5 freedoms which animal rights state must be in place for all animals yet gypsy horses don't have these freedoms so technically it shouldn't be allowed. And i know it is bad to say i wish gypsies weren't allowed horses but i really do believe that it shouldn't be allowed, i know a family of gypsies that have settled on a small piece of land with a paddock to give their horses a better way of life and i think this is great and i think that this is how it should be, settle with your horses in a safe environment, or don't keep horses. It doesn't seem fair |

That was genuinely traumatic to read about. There is a gypsy sight near me and all the ponies/horses there look in a dreadful state but the animal welfare acts cant/wont act because they are provided water and grazing. I agree with Jess, it seems that it is just accepted that these horses are mistreated because we are used to gypsies doing it. It isnt right and it isnt fair. If they didnt want that horse so much why didnt they just send it to auction? surely its better earning some money off it than drowning it with its trap? it just doesnt make sense. |
