Average about 4 steps per stride, depending on the height one two to steps for take off and then the same on the other side for landing (closer in for small jumps) It really depends on you and your horse. My exact steps are going to be different to yours because my horse is a long striding horse. Best thing to do is set up to poles walk the distance, say it walks two strides, now you go ride it and it rides two and a half, your steps are bigger then your ponies, try to set the poles up again at two strides adjusting your steps this time. Go ride it again. AS for placing poles, how do you want them, if you want to come in over the pole then jump the jump (like a bounce exercise) I step mine as pole four steps then jump. but this again depends on your horse, ride it and adjust if necessary. Not sure about trotting sorry.

troting poles should be 3 feet apart (toe to heel not steps) and a canter stride is 9 ft (again toe to heel) i have to do it this way rather than roughly 4 steps which is about 9ft but if i get it like a foot off grenville totally messes up his striding so i would always do the accurate way :)
