Recently i have had an accident, my friends pony ran into mine while out on a hack, my pony reared up and on me. I had a prolapsed disk and other problems with my vertebrae. I rotated my pelvis as i damaged ligaments and muscle. I had 5 months off whilst having physio and osteotherapy. I rode my 14.1hh pony for the first time the other day and she was nightmare!! well not as much as she could have been, the bit just wasn't working and she kept jogging off with me. I have never had a lesson in my life yet i am a confident and calm rider who has ridden all sorts of ponies. Maddison is currently in a dutch gagg!! during her time off my capable friend has been ridding her and lunging her. I just want some advice on new bits, training examples as i am only 15 and just dont know what to do with my mare!!! HELP

I don't think a change of bit will help, i think it is a combination of nerves and the fact you and your pony will be a bit out of tune after 5 months!!! I would say give yourself time to get into the swing of things again and maybe have some confidence boosting lessons, they can't do any harm :) also look on the riding with confidence group, there are loads of tips on there on how to get you confidence up and keep calm, good luck :) |

Some schooling may help you and your pony to get back in sync and to get her to listen to you? So lots of changes of pace, trot to halt etc and maybe some lateral work - leg yielding, all exercises to get her to listen :) Jut give your self some time with it, i hope it goes well!
Oh and the exact thing hapened to me when i was 12 at my first pc camp, me and my pony got knocked over and i had concussion, i was very lucky. But it has taken years of practice to get over my fears of letting my ride anywhere near another horse near mine whilst i am on top, you will be able to over come this :) |
