I had my new boy come down with colic last week.. Very mild and he came around that night.. A big relief.. but It got me thinking, what do you do to help prevent colic? Do you have any set routine? Did you know that once your horse has had colic it is more susceptible to it now? Water intake is a big thing. Mine have salt licks constantly to encourage drinking. I also monitor water intake and if i feel a horse isn't drinking enough I add salt to the their feed and fill a bucket of molassesy water for them.. |

I also like to make sure majority of my feed is roughage and fiber.. I also feed a sugar beet feed, I like it as it helps to moisten the intestines and can help to prevent impaction.. |

we give pony nuts as hard feed 1 scoop twice a day and plenty of roughage, haylege in winter when they are stabled in and they get grass in the fields in summer. we make sure not to mix haylege and grass, give an hour after feed before exercise. just the basic stuff. we have lost 2 horses to colic in 10 years, but they had growths causing the blockage, my friends pony is prone to get it after travelling, so we keep a close eye on her. |
