My horse is great at showjumping, and really fast. Problem is, is sometimes she can be 'stiff' to turn, and I end up jumping the jump on a very sharp angle.. Sometimes she is great to turn, but other times, she wont turn no matter what, and takes it extremely wide, this is a big problem in the classes I do, as they are sharp&fast. She is normally okay, she does it occasionly and I dont know what I can do to help her?

When you are showjumping (not against the clock) take the corners slower but for speed classes maybe try a turning cheek (full cheek) snaffle? Good luck :) and remember to keep your inside leg pressed against her side when turning sharply to help stop her falling in on herself

I've had to work on my turns and still doing so lol so these are the questions I'd ask yourself. Do you think you're over relying on the inside rein to turn? Are you forgetting the outside rein so she drifts out through her shoulder? Are you using your legs and weight aids enough for the turn? The outside leg is just as important as the inside one. Is she better turning in one direction, rather than the other, and what about you?

The thing is, shes normally fine, just sometimes, I press my outside leg on to keep her secure, and my inside a little bit, and open one rein a little bit, shes normally absolutely great, at turning fast&slow, but shes better turning fast&sharp? shes good at turning slow, but normally she is really slow&takes it really big, and i try to steer her. This is really offputting as it has ruined some of our competitions, and is making riding slow harder..

are you on the right leg? this can have a huge affect.. The way I turn on my horse is, half halt coming into the corner.. inside leg, holding with the outside rein and opening the inside rein.. All this time supporting with the outside side leg.. and keeping the impulsion.. But It is hard I know.. Practice trotting on a 20m circle then change rein take up canter and do a 10m circle.. this helps a lot on my horse..

you need to loosen her up, try doing lots and lots of circles varying the size and pace. place barrels or poles out in a straight line with about 3m between them and practice bending through them at walk and trot. do serpentines and figures of eight in trot and canter and be sure to change your canter leg as you change the rein...jus lots of practise should help...

Hi Natasha, Hmm sounds like there may be several things going on there. I would really recommend getting some video of you doing both slow and fast turns into some jumps, maybe some dog legs too. ............. There is a trainer on my site HorseVideoAnalysis.com (partner of TrotON) who is brilliant at analysing horse and rider combinations and how they can improve their jumping. Everyone who has had a video lesson with her has found it really useful in getting to the bottom of why things are happening the way they are! .............. Tina's dad (who trained her) wrote the BSJA training manual, so you couldn't get much better advice! Have a go, it will be £25 well spent I promise you. I set it up because I just love to see people getting better results with their horses.......... Annabelle
