I've not done many sj competitions but have started doing a few more this year as now have a trailer. However, the two shows I have done have been 2nd phase competions which I've not done before. I initially thought this would be a good idea as it saves time having to wait for jump offs and gets it done in one go. However, as I am a more "mature" rider I have found it hard trying to remember 14 jumps in one go and am exhausted by the end. I now hope to find a show with a jump off rather than 2 phase but these are becoming increasingly rare. What do other people think, am sure it suits the youngsters but not us oldies, or am I wrong ?

I know what you mean, I usually have trouble remembering the first phase! So I was surprised when I've done a couple of first round straight into jump off's and not forgotten the course. Maybe it's made me try extra hard to remember it. Also because it's a longer course you do need to take a couple of breaths lol so I think they're good on that front. I get knackered when I hold my breath. Work on the breathing and I bet you'll feel a lot better. I'm going to try Dazzle's singing suggestion for riding dressage tests, that she gave me in dressage wannabe's, next time I jump. All in all at the lower levels I'm quite pro running the two together. Mind you I may have cause to revise that opinion when I start competing again lol :)

I have actually surprised myself and have remembered the 2 phases but have found the thought of it daunting, and each time I have had 1 stop, they were both in the 2nd phase, which I have put down to me getting tired ? I will give concentrating on breathing control a go and see if that helps. Thank you.

i was at a show like this a while ago and i didnt like it. i like to concentrate on going clear and then if i go clear the first round i like to plan my jump off. the most recent 1 i was at was a disaster, there was a mess up warming up involving a girl running into the side of charlie jus before i had to go in... he was very wound up and agitated i managed to go clear but without a break between the 2 rounds and charlie still wound up i couldnt ask for the turns i needed to get a fast time.

I prefer two phase as one of my young horses gets agitated before he goes into jump offs so in two phase i can get the best out of him .
