so I recently found a bump on my horses neck, hairless and pretty small, but it's grown in size in the last two months but not by much. I started to do some research and found that it might be a sarcoid, but I HAVE NOT asked my vet about it yet. If it is a sarcoid, what is YOUR opinion on treatment if your horse where in this situation?

There are different types of sarcoid and therefore, different treatments work for different types. I have tried sarcex which had no effect on my mare. My mare has lumps on her inner hind leg. These grow outwards and after a period of time they do drop off but then bleed heavily. Last year the vet put a castrating band on one which then fell off - the band helped to seal up the wound. She now has two sarcoids which are at the point where they need to be dealt with again. I have now put a band on one and am waiting for it to fall off - then I will do the other one.

thank you:) I heard banding is a very reliable treatment and will probably take action through that.

Don't panic it might not be a sarcoid lol, if it is they can be removed by your vet by putting elastic bands round them cutting off the blood supply and it will fall off but get it seen now because the bigger they grow the more chance of them coming back (like all cancer it spreads) and it will be harder to treat. But it could be a growing wart or if it moves it could be a cyst it just depends. Let us know the verdict :)

My mare has two fairly small sarcoids, on the inner side of her back leg. I kept an eye on them and just waited until she was having her vaccinations and asked the vet to look at them. He confirmed that they were sarcoids, but we decided that there was no point in treating them at this stage, as they hadn't grown or spread. They don't cause her any discomfort at all. But i would say, as you said your horses' sarcoid had grown, it might be best to get it looked it, especially as it's summertime and the fly's like to bit them, which can lead to them spreading. Hope this helps! x

Hi there there are as mentioned aboved many ways to treat sarcoids at the vet clinic where i work we see horses with sarcoids quite often we have found you can you a particular ointment on them call xxtera or they can also be surgically removed in some cases and freezed with liquid nitrogen or as previously mentioned you can band them and wait for them to fix themselves. hope all goes well with your horse.

Last summer , we encountered an appaloosa that had them verey bad, around his eyes and ears and were growing into his eye sockets and into his ears, I've only heard about a treatment for them with great success from a vet clinic in texas and the procedure was to biopsy the sarcoid, and dip it into nytrogen oxide and then reimplant it into the horse causing the body to fight it with its own immune system, what ever you do STAY on top of it, they are unsightly, and are difficult to get rid of by most methods, good luck, If Scout had been treated sooner, he might still be around, he was a great horse.

This link to the University of Liverpool has quite a bit of info on Sarcoids that might interest you-and some pretty nasty pictures!! We've just discovered our new horse has a sarcoid, right on his girth line-typical, it could hardly have been on a worse spot. According to the vet in the link there are over 40 different treatment options used around the world so it's best to get your vets opinion-different sarcoids need different treatments. As AllAboutMe mentions, it's now thought that they can be spread by flies which is why it is best to remove them. I've also wondered if it would be worth giving our horse something to boost his immunity. I'll do a bit of research. And I'm sure someone does a supplement for preventing sarcoids. Has anyone tried it or know anyone who has?
