hi, i have a young pony that has been diagnosed with gastric Ulcers (through scoping) she is being treated with gastro guard and some pellet sort of food, but they have not yet been given the all clear for the time. I understand that they may never go away and she is not in any pain and our vets went through and watched her daily routine and said that there is nothing stressful about it. She had a foal about a year ago with old owners and the foal was taken away to early (they think this is the cause)through 4 scopes. I was wondering is there any way atall we can help her with getting them better through food? shes only 7 and we dont want her on meds for the rest of her life. thanks Kate x

Hi You may need to change the nutrition and management totally. I'd recommend keeping away from compounds and hard feed. Keep to good quality forage and only feed more if the work warrants it and then stick to something like Simple System feeds that uses no grains or pulses etc. Keep access to feed all the time - horses are grazers so need constant food ideally rather than 2 meals a day and limited forage. You will obviously have to choose your quality of forage carefully to keep the energy intake right. There are herbal options to treat ulcers. Best wishes HorseVet

Someone once told me there are two types of racehorse. Ones with ulcers and ones that are going to get them. Has to be in the feeding, Most cannot live a natural life, 23 hours in a box, 3 hard feeds a day. THe gut produces huge amounts of acid, without food in there the acid attacks the stomach wall. Look up Slippery Elm and talk to an equine homeopath as to whether it would be appropriate to help your pony. Might save a huge amount of £ss.
