Hey, A while ago I was contacted about a couple of horses for sale so I went up to take a look. One of the horses was a 2 year old filly, no one had done anything with her and her feet were so long that they were starting to grow back. Even though we didn't have the money for another horse I couldn't just walk away, so I agreed to help them get her at least to the point where her feet can be trimmed. Although I have trained horses in the really early stages I have never had the opportunity to halter break one. For the past couple of times I have been working on trust, I got the halter on with out a fuss and then I went to start introducing leading and everything fell apart. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? At the moment I don't have a clue as to what I should do so any help would be appreciated. |

if you have already established getting the headcollar on you will need a long line not a regular length lead rope, walk away taking a little bit of pull on the headcollar, if she pulls away let the line run through your hands for a few feet before getting a hold again and wait until she takes one step toward you then praise and release the pressure. Don't rush stand there all day if you have to with her on one end of the line and you on the other but one small step is all it takes and eventually one step turns into a sequence then do a similar thing when introducing turning, a pressure headcollar might be a good idea because it speeds up learning and releases pressure very quickly. Also join up would mean she would follow you naturally so that would be a good place to start and then introduce the line once she is comfortable just following you. Good luck :) |
