I've just found out that my lovely gelding has penile cancer. He is 15 now which is quite young to get it-tends to be in older horses from 15+. He has always had a build up which I have had to clean, it gets really bad and this time despite giving him a tube of sedelan he wouldn't let me near him so I knew something was up. Unfortunately the vets confirmed he has cancer over quite a large area. They had to sedate him really heavily to clean it so I'm not going to be able to do anything in this obviously sensitive area Has anyone had any experience of horses with cancer in this area? I have a really good vet but would also like some complementary therapy ideas as well as the conventional. The good news is that he sashayed down the field with his mare-obviously feeling a lot more comfortable-bless him. |

Hi
Treating cancer is tricky at the best of times but an area where he's not keen to let you monitor/treat is going to be more so. Success depends on how quickly its growing and if it's affecting his ability to urinate etc. Depending on what type of cancer it is you might try a homeopathic vet. I don't get asked to treat cancer in horses very often but I suspect there might be herbal options too.
Techniques I use for treating cancer in dogs would be prohibitively expensive on horses I suspect.
Best wishes

Hi Flicka. I recently read a book by Australian author and goat and horse keeper, Pat Colbey called "Natural Horse Care" and in it she describes successfully treating cancer in horses through the use of vitamin C injections and other natural remedies. I highly recommend it (the book) and wish the lovely Farlow all the best. x |

I have heard of a lady who works with health enhancement herbs. She has had a lot of success with skin cancers, sarcoids and melanomas. You can email her at webbysfarm@live.co.uk She may be able to help. Good luck and best wishes.

Thanks for the feedback, I will look for the book and check out the other lady. When I told my vets that I was open to a 'complementary' treatment that would help his immunity they suggested aloe juice. This seemed to give him a bit more spark and when he went for his check up after 4 months the tumour hadn't increased. I have also been told that vitamin C is good for cancer although they recently did research to show that if a person is having chemo then it can inhibit it's effect so best not to take it. Wish there were more vets and doctors like HorseVet who were more open to complementary therapies. |
