I have heard from time to time about the benefits of Manuka Honey in wound healing. I just wondered if anyone had used it with success? I have been looking on a website about it, actually for human usage. However, I am now wondering what or if people use it on their horses?

Manuka honey comes from New Zealand, apparently the antibacterial and anti fungus properties are so good they can even heal wounds from MRSA and suppress the bacterial growth. I have never actually used any honey in treating horses, although my son has bee propolis and Aloe vera cream for his excema which works better than any steroid cream, we have tried lots! Hopefully some of the NZ members may be able to add more info on it?! Just wondered would you use the honey on a dressing for wounds? Or what would you use it for?

Hi Yes I use Manuka honey and its great but as someone else said any unpcocessed honey should be just as good. With Manuka honey the higher the + value the stronger it is. I tend to only use +15 or above and it is expensive. Best wishes HorseVet

There's been some research on the reduced healing time of wounds in horses when Manuka honey was used(link). I like the idea of the Manuka gel which wouldn't require bandages. Is there any on the market?
