I found this story on Trot On Twitter about a guy claiming that he cured his horse's colic by giving him some beer to drink. Apparently when his horse got colic he suddenly remembered an old horsemans tale that gassy drinks were good for it-BURP!! I'd be interested to know if anyone else has heard of this.

Ha ha never heard of this one, liquid paraffin yes, but beer no! I'm sure he was very lucky that the blockage cleared by itself. Sure most concerned owners would just give their vet a call!! I think back in the day alcohol was a cure for most things?! It certainly isn't something I would try!

Hi I'd be wary of giving a fermentable drink to a horse already filled with gas. Horses don't have a great reflex to regurgitate so adding to gas could be contra-indicated. On the other hand if there is something in beer that stimulates gut activity then it might help a quiet gut but not an overactive spasmodic colic. Best to get your vet to find out what type of colic you're dealing with and get the right treatment asap. If a colic is going to end up being surgical the sooner it is properly diagnosed and monitored the better. Best wishes HorseVet

at my old riding, one of the horses is prone to colic with the weather, we have tryed a number of things and non have seemed to work apart from corrective rugging and the such. But we were recomended by our vet to give him a drink of beer when he got colic, works:)

Colic is a general term for abdominal pain. There are over 100 possible causes. To give beer without knowing what the cause is will inevitably lead to a problem sooner or later. Just because it might work for one situation doesn't make it right for every one. You are gambling with your horse's life potentially. Best wishes HorseVet

Pilgrim had colic, ended up at Rossdales where he parted with 20ft of gut! Wanting to give him the best chance post op I rang an equine homeopathic helpline asking for advice. They suggested "Slippery Elm". It has long been used as an internal healer for stomach and gut problems, ( look up uses). I mixed the powder with honey and hot water so it made a thick drink and he supped it like guinness from a scoop. I am never without it and if any horse looks tucked up or collicky I administer this. I imagine it would work wonders for horses with stomach ulcers. Also to keep our horses hydrated in winter esp in cold snaps I give a bucket of hot water with molasses in. The horses sup again very happily and you have kept them warm interiorally and hydrated and generally how they should be.......Looked after!
