I've just been reading reviews of new documentary called Buck about a trainer called Buck Brannaman. I'd never heard of him before and would love to know if anyone has had any experience of the man and his training methods. http://blog.trotontv.com/2011/01/man-who-inspired-novel-and-hollywood.html |

I've read his book, The Faraway Horses. I thought it was very good. If you like Monty Roberts, I think you'd like Buck Brannaman. |

He is the real deal. No gimmicks. No great marketing strategy. Just an honest to goodness cowboy keeping the relationship between man and horse simple. As it should be.
If you have seen the movie "Horse Whisperer" with Robert Redford and Scarlett Johansen (before she was a superstar" you have seen his work. All the horses in that movie were his horses that e personally trained.
I very rarely (as in almost NEVER) endorse a particular trainer but he is as close as I get. |

Don't let the movie title fool you. Its NOT about Monty Roberts. (Thank God. He is such a croc.) Let the hate mail begin! =O) |

Aghh, ha ha, I don't want to get into that debate but he seems a very softly spoken unshowy sort of guy and says he doesn't go around calling himself a horse whisperer as he'd get laughed out of town by other cowboys. However he doesn't mind if people want to call him that as it's a way to easily communicate what he does, as most people have seen the film. Horseworld thanks for recommending the book-I wouldn't mind reading that :) |

HAHHAAA!!! I'll leave it alone! I think that the practice of "whispering" is just common sense. You can see it in a book written by a Greek calvary officer in the 2nd century. Its not "new". And I guess thats what bugs me about the whole scene. And I understand everyone has to make a living but come on! Enough is enough! I wish there were more people out there that were more focused on the communication between the horse and rider and strengthening that bond than making a few dollars. Oh well, its not a perfect world. |

Buck Brannaman was the inspiration for "The Horse Whisperer". He's amazing, much better, in my PERSONAL opinion, than Monty Roberts, as i've researched both of them. I havent seen the movie though, is it good? |

Don't know yet if we'll get the film in the UK but it's getting rave reviews in the USA. The horse whisperer was based on the training methods of Tom Dorrance, Ray Hunt, and Buck Brannaman and it should be remembered that it was a love story rather than a training manual so some liberties have been taken in time scale. The horse used in the hobbling scene was Buck's own horse who was happy to lie down and they had to wet him to look sweaty. From what I've read, he does in extreme circumstances believe in laying a horse down if it is the only way to save it from being euthanased. Has anyone got The Horse Whisperer DVD?-apparently there's a making of The Horse Whisperer which shows some of Buck's involvement. |
