Hi Flashboy have you thought about trying some long reining with him? You could google and probably gets some good tips on it - I am no expert, but horses seem to take to it quite easily and the rein contact is more like being ridden, as you are using 2 reins. You can then also lunge with 2 reins and the trailing rein can be used to encourage your horse forward and it will of course help to steer him out onto the circle and stop him turning in toward you. Hope this helps. |

You should always carry a whip when you lunge, that doesn't mean you ever have to hit your horse, but if he was taught to lunge properly he will be confused if you are not holding it!The lunge line the horse and the whip should form a triangle with you slightly behind the horse. If he's been taught properly there should be no need to bully him, but you've got to let him know what you want. Alternatively it could be that he has no idea what you want because he's never been taught, in which case you will need to get someone to walk round with him and stop him from turning in on you. It should only take a few trys to stop it, but you need the whip to indicate to him where he should not be going!! |

Due to the fact that its been a long while since you've really worked him. He is most likely outta shape. It can be uncomfertable. He could have knots and be really tight in certain areas, causing him to turn to you and not wanna go that way. Make him stand and square up. Make sure his head is straight. Go up and down both sides of his neck. If there are knots in this area you will be able to feel them. They could be small. So really, really feel in there. Afterwards if there are any. Massage them, dig in there. it will feel comfertable to him. It will help. He could also be tight in other areas as well. If you do find knots. Getting something called blue lotion will help. It's like icy hot but it's made for horses. You can out it on other areas to. If he has no knots he made just need to get back in to working again. Just don't let him get away with not going that way. Try it in a samll round pen if you have one. |
