Hi, When i jump my pony Ballad tends to bomb off after the fence how can stop him from doing this? Also he jumps the fences a lot bigger (on the correct stride) than he is supposed to, how can i get him to jump the correct height?

its just a lot of work over smaller jumps.. less experienced horses overjump jumps because they have not learned to gauge how much height and width they need to use to clear the jump.. therefore he is not confident yet.. lots of practice and maybe some free jumping.. but over little stuff...

Yeah, i reckon its gonna grow out of him as he does have potential and i want to do well on him and so jumping would help and maybe some gridwork, we would free jump but we have an outdoor school and its at a riding school so i dont think our yard owner would want me too lol :-)

i would maybe do some small bounce jumps so he has to think about where he is putting his feet after the jump and stays controlled so he can't bomb off without knocking the jump down and knocking his legs, also i used to put about 4 cantering poles (9ft between each pole for striding) either side of a jump so gren had to focus and keep a steady rythum in and out of the jump that way your horse will learn to become more balanced without get frustrated over you pulling, circling, panicking etc. Hope this helps :) Oh and relax and let your horse find his own pace over the poles instead of pacing him youself so he will learn for himself that if he goes too fast he knocks a pole or trips and eventually you should have a calm steady canter in and out of a jump
