Hi there, I have a horse with high head carriage, and was told to use a chambon which was 'one size fits all' and too big for a start, and has no give, for me it made no improvement and I felt cruel using it, but I know that some horses respond to those training aids well, and if theyre used properly I can see no harm, though even a market harborough leaves my mare bucking for weeks after I've finished using it (Still with the high head carriage) :)

Have you tried using Vienna reins? I longe TB (who used to carry his head high) with them twice a week and he is now actively seeking contact, but not pulling, and trots around contently with a wonderful low head carriage.

No gadgets for me :) my horse hates them. The furthest i go is a flash noseband and a running martingale. My instructor tried draw reins once and when she gave tiny pressure he just went straight up and nearly reared over backwards. So i decided to get rid if the bridle. But then the livery owner said health and safety meant i had to use a bridle be it bitted or bitless so that was the end of that lol but i believe you should always use the least amount of gadgets you can :)

For those who want to transition from the bungee type reins to real draw reins I would suggest using surgical tubing. This is a silicone tubing that is less flexible than bungees but has enough resistance for the horse to get the right idea. I have used them for everything from AQHA Hunter Under Saddle to Warmbloods training for the dressage ring. This advice comes from a Western Pleasure/Equitation English Pleasure/ Equitation and AQHA World Show top 10 finalist. Ask your vet for some! If you would like instructions on how to make them- feel free to email me. dixierider@gmail.com Always willing to help a fellow horseperson!
