Can i ask what you think about a horse being on Bute long term. My horse has a stifle injury ,soft tissue vet thinks. Im not sure how shes done it but bin lame for 2 months. Im waiting for 2nd opinion on xrays, but the vet seems t think she may have t be on bute long term.
She also has navicular so resting her for some months wouldnt do this any good. Any advice would b appreciated, also more natural painkillers. |

Alternatives. Bute long term is not good for the kidneys, but do you want a comfortable horse for 2 years, or an uncomfortable one for 4? We use Devils Relief to help the old boys knees. Bute would probably be more effective but he won't eat it. You don't say how old she is, but our vets take the view that if they are teenagers they are better off being comfortable, and we agree. I'm still riding the old boy, when he is too stiff the decision will be made but at the moment he is perfectly happy. |

Biche is 15and some who has looked at her, sort of a chiropractor, and gifted, said that she is really good for her age ,and is a real poppet, and that was from a man.
So i was quite impressed. I do have her on Buteless, feed mark herbal stuff so i will perhaps give her that as an alternative. |

I've heard Arnica is a good painkiller, but that won't have an anti-inflammatory effect. I've also heard that Bute gives horses ulcers. In addition, I have also heard that Vitamin C injections can counter the damage that Bute does to the horse's body. Yes, I've heard a lot, but experienced none of it first hand, so take it with a grain of salt :-D |

I can now also say that in my experience Devil's Claw is not as good as bute, but can still have an effect. |
