I was talking to an Australian member about racing and was told that it's mainly on the flat and there isn't much jump racing now and it's likely to be banned outright. Do you think that's a good idea?

tbh I don't think they should get rid of the jumps racing as I don't have any experience in it. I DO realise that there's quite a high injury chance but is this because the horses are raced too young? Would you jump YOUR 3 year old over 5ft+ at full pelt? Of course then you have them having 'less energy' as they get older but won't they have more experience, fitness and stronger and BE ABLE to finish the race. But like I said I don't know ANY facts, would be fab to get an insight from and insider.

I dont think it should be banned outright, and i think it would be sad if that happens. I think if there is such an issue with under training, maybe there should be a committee that at barrier trials (do jumps have barrier trials like on flats)judge whether they think the horse is ready to compete..

My partner and have been with race horse's all of our lives, he train's and I ride, good partnership I think. Jump's racing shouldn't be banned, for starter's what's going to happen to those horse's, not all of them can make hack's, as how many people are going to have there horse's going bounce, bounce, bounce, shying quickly, growing a hand because they see a small horse, etc, there not all quiet, I know that I ride them when there race fit and full of oat's, but there not all quiet. Jump's racing is only the way it is because the jump's are too small, hence the jokies are getting the horse's to go over the jump's way to quickly, there's no respect for the jump's (as the steward's have only made them so high, the rest is brush), so the horse's just go straight through them. I believe that jump's jockie's need to go and have show jumping lesson's, then they will learn how to get the horse to jump on a long or short stride, how read the jump and how to set the horse up, I know that there not going over show jump's or cross country jump's.

Yes they do have jump's trail's, a new horse has to pass a jump's trial to be able to get its ticket to be entered in jump's racing, and if there's a horse that fall's, or has problem's, it to has pass another jump's trial

It is banned in Australia in all states except Victoria, my horse was bred for hurdling but think he only ever raced on the flat. NSW is now putting a $100 levy on all foals registered for racing. This is to fund rehab programs for ex racehorses in NSW. I think jumps racing will never be safe for horses or jockeys. I disagree with jumps & flat racing as the horses are still babies when they are raced as two & three year olds. I believe this is why so many of them have soundness problems & jumping at speed when young puts too much strain on their frames.
