hi i have been looking after my friends horse for 6 weeks because she is pregnant, he is 4 and been for training befor i got him, i have gently hacked him out on the grass with boots on about once a week maybe twice for about half an hr at a time had a little canter for about 100yrds in a field. 2 tiny little jumps, can you tell me if this could cause a splint and if its sore and tender has it just happened,

Ask your vet, the ground it too hard to canter or jump and my friends horse has just got a splint from the field when they were galloping around. Walk and trot on hard ground is fine (only trot if it is flat) but if you cantered and jumped on the hard ground, no matter how big the jump or how fast and long the canter was, the impact couldd have caused the splint. On the other hand though it could have been there a while and just flared up cos' of the ground ask your friend about it or your vet.

If he has come up lame, but there is no signs of heat etc, chances are a splint is being thrown. Horse will need to be rested until they come up sound. The further round the front of the leg it is, the better, If it comes up further round the back, then you may need to get the vet out to check it as they can interfere with the tendons and ligaments. A fittening programme on the road will help strengthen the legs and help to prevent splints.

thanks for that peoples, hes not my horse and she wont get the vet, she is taking a persons that she has known for 1 month rather than a riend she has knwn for 2 years, hes not lame and i checked his leg befor he went home and he was fine , she has had him back a week, he is a bully in the field mounting the mares and biting them, could he have been kicked and if it is tender and sore has it just happened. he has allways let me touch and lift his legs but now he wont. I am gutted, i treated him better than my own horse and now our friendship is un repairable Thanks again for your fast replys

Thats a shame that has happened. But unfortunately that is the risk we take when we help out others, give her time, and if she doesn't come round, then she really isn't the type of friend that you want. Chin up
