Ok i have always known my horse is disgusting (he tramples his poo through his bed) but this is a bit much...The other day i saw he was eating something... i looked over his door to see him take a huge mouthful of poo, he ate an entire fresh poo. Is there any reason for him doing this or is he just being disgusting? He is well fed, i also give him plenty of carrots and apples. he is worked 6 days a week, and his day off is usually spent in the field. he does like chewing things but usually he would chew his water bucket or the tyre it sits in if he was to chew anything.

Foals eat their mother's poo, to help them have the correct bacteria to help in the digestive process. It could be a mineral deficiency or a lack of fibre. Or could just be a habit that he never grew out of. Another reason could be boredom if he is in his stable for long periods. Maybe try an all round mineral supplement in his feed, or if he is in the stable boredom breakers such as treat ball, suede hanging from the door etc. Also a mineral lick if he hasn't got one.It wont harm him to eat it and if anything does more good than harm.

I have never seen him eat poo before and iv had him 2 years now. i dont think it was boredom because i had just spent an hour grooming him, he was beside his girlfriend and there was alot goin on at the time...i also give him a mineral lick, i use it for streches. i will keep an eye on him tho

what about a salt block that you can leave in his stable all the time.. My horse started to eat dirt one day, like literally eat the dirt. i also know a lot of people that have empty milk bottles tied up on some string above there door.. Maybe it was yummy poo... ;)

lovely! my dad said maybe i just likes hot food...i was nearly sick haha well hes out in the field for the next few days. i hav found a flatish football that im going to put in the stable with him so he can play with it...he thinks its a fun game to turn his water bucket upside down even if its still in the tyre lol il get him a salt block if he keeps doing it, they are going out to the field for the summer soon. i was just wondering if ther was any... nutritional reason for him to eat poo lol
