I was hoping someone could explain this video of Linda Parelli and what she is doing? I am very confused as to me it doesn't look very nice. It is hard to tell what the aim is as the horse seemed quite calm to start off with and continues to look round right to the end. Also, the horse is praised but doesn't seem to like being patted and is moving away from the praise which would suggest it doesn't understand any of what has just happened? I am not trying to dismiss Parelli, I just really would like to understand what the video shows as I cannot see any benefit and have just watched it a few times?

I saw this online ages ago, and I can't quite work out the point of it. Parelli does some weird stuff, but people claim it works, just what problem she was trying to solve is beyond me! I'd love to read an explaination on it, and the justification of why this method, what was the desired result from this, and just what was the problem before, and was it actualy a horse problem or a handler problem? Should it have been the handler getting that treatment instead of the horse. Please someone enlighten us.

There was quiet a big up roar about this when it was first released. I found awhile ago on Parellihorsemanship.com that Linda blogged a statement about it.

Though even on reading the statement i don't think what she was doing was very horsemanship like...

The whole point is to get the horse listening to you and focused, this horse is not listening to her,and keeps on invading her space. I have done a bit of parelli it seems strange the tasks you do and the seven games but believe you me i,ve seen some amazing things happen with this.
It is not cruel in any way,and people who practise this all the time have amazing relationships with there horses.
I can now load my horse myself which i couldnt do before .
Until you try this or watch alot about it you wont understand on what they are doing.
I,ll try anything equine to help me understand my horse, and to improve my relationship, and bits of certain ways can be helpfull. And if you dont want to ride or cant for some reason you can still enjoy doing thins with your horse.
Go to the parelli conference you,ll see what i mean.

this is a very small clip from the old level one training dvd,it must be ten years old, Linda has moved on a lot since this was made but i will attempt to explain,Barney was on his last, chance his behaviour was deemed to be so dangerous that he was about to be put to sleep.he was at a parelli clinic with his owner but was continually walking over him and showing no respect for personal space, the weather was windy and barney was spooking but jumping all over his owner, Linda took over at the request of Barney's owner and was attempting to teach Barney some spacial awarness. It did work and Linda needed to be very firm and effective,Barney is now a therapy horse and leading a happy and useful life,Barney's owner has also commented on this clip and said that you need to see the whole thing before making negative comments on what is percieved to be happening. As you all probably know i am a parelli fan, these methods have certainly worked well for my boy and me.

Hi thanks for explaining this a little further. I have also read the statement, thanks Standard_Girl. To me it appears that Linda is frustrated at the horse smacking the horse with the lunge line and yanking on it, sending conflicting messages which Im sure many horses would not be so patient to take! She also seems incompetent in her manner, however as mentioned it is an old clip.
I will continue to look at Parelli, as I have heard a lot of positive feedback. Interesting how this clip does not demonstrate the 4 basic principles of Parelli; Relationship, understanding, communication and trust. But as I said I wasnt dismissing Parelli, I was just completely shocked. There is good and bad in many things, so I will continue to learn what the 7 games are all about........

the best teachers of the Parelli methods are the Parelli's themselves or one of their students, the training dvd's are well presented and self explanatory. they are easy to understand and follow, that is probably the reason they are expensive, if you can afford to buy the dvd's keep a lookout on e-bay they are often for sale on there ,people sell them usually to fund their next level.
