I have a short wheel base diesel turbo Shogun, lovely vehicle. I don't think any of them are particularly good on fuel. Avoid the Ford explorer as the parts are really expensive as they american and the parts are hard to get.

I don't think they make them anymore but towing and good on fuel a diatsu 4 track, and for everyday, my other half swears by them, but we can't find a new enough one to replace our Discovery with. He used to have one, but says he really regrets selling it. It's not really a problem using the discovery, it's 10p a mile (towing) and we only use it for towing now (still gets used 3/4 times a week though).

I currently have a Shogun which I'm selling to get a Discovery. Shogun's been great but my friend's Disco seems much better at towing 2 larger horses.

Yes the Daihatsui were good work vehicles, similarly the Isuzu troopers have a fab reputation with farmers as being strong, robust and economical, but they can tend to rot underneath.

At the moment all the towing is done by my LWB shogun it's OK bit heavy on the diesel, have to say though had a Vitara for 4yrs and my god she worked tough cookie, no problem pulling 2 16.3 mare's up the drive in 2 wheel drive, the shogun does a bit of skidding in 2 wheel as it's empty in the back, due to the LWB alway's have to put it in 4w, having said that had a SWB in the shogun and she was a worker held the drive and field's no problem, but don't think anything beat's the Landcruiser, what a work dog, very pricey here but well worth it, also my hubby's automatic Sonata towed the box and 2 mare's, he was kind of freaking over it, but it just had to be done...

Loved my Daihatsu 4 trak, it never let me down, why did they stop making them? It rusted to death in the end. A SWB Nissan Terrano I had was NO substitute, useless on wet going even in 4WD. Wrote that off in Jan...will probably go for a Discovery or Shogun when I get round to replacing it, (thanks to advice on this site!) as I'm not towing at the moment. It's a luxury if you can have a separate car for ordinary driving, as all towing vehicles are heavy on fuel.

We actually worked out for the mileage we did it was cheaper to have a second car for driving about, even taking in to account the road tax and insurance etc. We do occasionally take the Disco for a long run somewhere as it needs it to keep running sweet, but hardly does 8,000 miles a year we have it insured for. The cars well I used to do 100 miles a day, and other half did up to 200 a day so much cheaper for us both to have other cars, all diesel ones too, so no putting in the wrong fuel!!!!!

Love the Disco but too pricey for me. Our last 4x4 was a Mitsubishi Animal and that towed really well although the turning circle wasn't brilliant. But could pull two big horses even up an down steep Exmoor hills no probs. Swapped that for a Nissan Navarra which I really love and am now an expert at reversing into parking spots at supermarket and the mulitistorey's near us, without the trailer of course !! Having a flat back truck has it's pros and cons. Good for picking up hay and straw and bags of food etc. But like the boot of a disco for putting tack etc in.
