I am getting my new yearling home next weekend! (very excited ) He is a Welsh B x riding pony and has been kept inside since september!! He has only been fed haylage. The spring he was born he was with his mum, and on grass... Do you think i should be giving him any hard feed? I am worried he may be missing vits/minerals etc...or will grass and hay be ok? thanks! Emily

well it depends on how old he is as if he is quite young he wont be able to eat hard food so hay and grass would be fine but if hes older than 1 then he should be ok with some hard food, hope i helped

Our's were sharing hard feed with their mum's while they were still suckling...they are yearling's now and were out most of the winter on hard feed and haylage, we only brought them in for a few week's of the big freeze. We still give them small amount of hard feed in the evening it's really a treat more than anything, if you have good grazing that should really be enough for the summer, we did have to give copper paste last summer to one of the throughbred yearling's, her coat went a kind of tingy colour.

I don't think you need to feed too much, because what you don't want is him to get laminitis, he does probably need some vitamins and minerals but yuo could give him a broad spectrum supplement with a little hi fi chaff and high fibre nuts, he shouldn't really need anything else because if he has toomuch he will just get fat and this won't help his growth at all, you need to keep the youngster lean, so he grows nice and straight, obviously his feet need trimming regularly too. Hope this helps. x
