Really you want to geld before he is 2 and reaching sexual maturity but if you leave it past 3 years you might be in for a fight and struggle. |

it really depends on him, you see some people geld at two, some at 6 months but personally if he is acting stallioninish ,lol, or just studdish or even acting up ,challenging you/other horses or just plaing old not responsive you know that stuff ;) then i would do it in like two months when hes one but normaly you wouldn want to geld him before you start training him to be ridden, as then he will most likely be easier to train , personally i would do it when he was 1 1/2 if he is acting fine!! |

I had Chester 'snipped' at about 11 months as he had started barging and kicking out at my daughter and generally being a monster. The vet wasn't keen on doing it this early but I didn't want any of my family injured so for safety sake, he was done. It hasn't stopped his barging and he has general bad manners but on the whole, he is nicer! It all depends on the horse and generally, as casey (above) says, 1 1/2 is a good age. Good luck with him, he looks very cute :) |

I think perfect time is dependent on circumstances/horse in question. Not sure about it being ideal 1) at time of weaning, could be like two blows in one 2) as winter sets in (especially if autumn weaned). My vets seemed to reckon on very early spring, ideally in a dry spell, before flies/randiness/boisterousness get too advanced! |

It really depends on the horse and your skill at handling stallions. I prefer studs. A WELL BEHAVED STUD. There are horses out there that need to be gelded as soon as medically possible. Here in the States we usually have it done before they reach the point of "Wait a minute. I'm BIGGER then you. I don't HAVE to listen to you!" On the other hand my horse (a Brazilian Paso Fino) was not gelded til he was 7. Imported to the states at 6 he was unsuccessfully in the US show ring and then sold as a gelding because of his "failure" in the US ring. :O( I know he has offspring in Brazil. |

I'd let him tell you when it needs to be done between now and 2yrs old.
I'm pretty much in the same boat. I figure as long as the lil' fella minds himself and doesn't challenge me or become unnecessarily dangerous then I'll be leaving him till next spring.
It doesn't hurt to let them have some extra time with horomones for developing. Of course, that will depend on how he is with you and the other horses. |
