Hi, I notice a lot of show jumpers put ear covers on their horses and wondered if it's just a fashion accessory or have you used them and found that they really helped your horses performance?

Hi Flicka, no its not a fashion thing, its so that when horses are performing it blocks the sound from the crowd so that the horse can consontrate more easily on what disipline they are doing, the ear covers are mainly used in showjumoing. I have found out that they actually really do work!

they are great, i wish i had a pair at the last comp i went to.. the junior grand prix started a lot later then it should have, it was on dusk, we were under lights. The first round we had the dog high jump over in front of the grandstand with the crowds making quite a bit of noise, and then we had a rural fire fighters demonstration were they set a structure in front of the grandstand alight and then brought in the truck to put it out.. coupled with the usual show noises.. i bought one the very next day

They are used to hold the cotton wool placed into the horses ears and obviously nicer to look at than a horse wearing big ear muffs!!

Not only do they keep cotton in but they help keep flies from landing on the horses' ears, that way the horse isn't constantly shaking their head trying to get flies off. I've definitely found them helpful at late spring and early summer shows where flies were awful.
