I think being physically fit-as opposed to good looking fit lol-can really help your confidence on and around horses. I know that may sound silly as you probably think riding is enough exercise in itself but sometimes I think we need a bit more to help with core strength, range of motion, balance and body awareness. And you're probably also saying, 'yeah but I muck out too' but unfortunately I think yard work often adds to our one-sidedness: a dominant arm and more weight through one leg. As I wasn't well for a while I really noticed I had lost a lot of my strength, fitness and confidence so joined a gym last week-aghh! I was amazed though how I immediately started to feel more confident. I did a lot of aerobic stuff that also worked on core strength and used the fit ball which is great for balance. I also do a bit of Tai Chi for body awareness. I wondered if anyone else uses exercise to help improve their riding? And what do you recommend?

I do air force exercises, have for years, which maintain strength & suppleness in all main muscle groups. I also run (jog more like!) which I once swore I'd never do! & I can't say I love it, but to me there is no substitute for achieving fitness, & helps you in later life avoid osteoporosis, & I read in today's paper even helps your brain! memory & stuff. Having said that I haven't since just before Xmas! so shouldn't brag! too busy/dark/horrible/icey. But will start again soon

I have just started Aquafit, which is going to be my new Thursday night thing! I really do think it is so important for our health and wellbeing to maintain a level of fitness, although I am shamed to say I don't feel that way right now! Perhaps we could all motivate each other! I think that is my main downfall, motivating myself, any tips anyone?!

Thanks for starting this thread, Flicka. I know I need to be much fitter but as Em28 says, where to get the enthusiasm for it? I suppose I should be able to motivate myself, but we all need help with things!! I think you're right about the one sidedness. I ride, walk the dog and muck out but I am very stiff :( I also could do with losing some weight! Maybe we should start a mutual support group...

I did a fit ball class today and really recommend that for riders as it works on core strength and balance. I know I find it harder to release my left leg at the hip and I found some of the exercises really made me work on that so will hopefully help even me up. We also did a bit of hoola hooping which not only was a laugh but is good for moving that pelvis. Will let everyone know how I get on and if I find it makes a difference while I'm riding.

I'm a Pilates fan. It's not only brilliant for core strength, but I find it wonderfully relaxing too...If you fancy trying a fit ball here are some exercises specifically aimed at riders that you can do at home.

This one may be better - you don't even need a ball - just a mat... It's shorter too :D

Motivation is definitely the key to success here, and it appears that I am a better motivator for others then I am for myself. Out of shape is being kind, honestly I need to start today in hopes It will make a difference in my overall well being not only my riding. Pilates looks like it may be an excellent alternative to joining a gym(def not in the budget). Thanks for starting this and lets try to be each others inspiration by "sticking with it", and by up dating our progress and methods. Who's in besides me?

Well definitely me, although I could hardly get out of bed this morning because my stomach muscles are soo sore!! So my advice to others is take it slowly, don't push yourself too much as I always do!! I must say I'm surprised though how quickly I can feel the difference in my riding and like Sue says I feel better in general as well. If you're doing exercise at home I think it's good to make just a few exercises like above part of your early morning routine. My top tip-lock the dogs out of the room, otherwise you get your face washed at the same time-Ugh! Better sign off, I've got to turn the horses out and then on to aqua aerobics!!
