Hi, is he clipped in that area?
My horse is fully clipped and has a fleece, 100g stable rug and a 250g full neck on top (did while it was snowing) I have a bib on him that you can buy from most tack shops or ebay, they really work. I would say get a bigger size and dont pay to much as i am not on my 5th this year. They are so thin and like silk so stops it rubbing. He has a 300g full neck and a fleece on while turned out but still has his bib on. Is your rug old, to tight or to small? That could be a main part of it. Horses are greasy and it can build up and irritate the skin. I have never had one rubbed to bad by a rug but i have seen some horses on my yard with think skin and they can get really bad. |

Rug vests are great but don't use a Lycra one cos' they make it worse. My horse had rug rub last year but this year it has been fine because of his vest. |

Change to a different brand of rug that allows for better movement in the rubbed areas, the various brands all come up differently in different places, I can't use Masta rugs on one of mine, in another I need an amigo a side bigger to allow for his chest and shoulders, so he has a very cosy bum! Some are better for narrow horses, some for high withered some for big shoulders. You need to find a brand that suits, I have no rug rubs on my horses. |
