I have owned 11 ponies in my life, I have often been asked why I didnt buy horses instead as I am 5ft 8" tall & my weight has veried from 10st-11st over the years but now at the grand old age of 57 people have stopped asking.! well the reasons are many fold. I feel nervous around horses but not ponies although my welsh cob stands at 14.3hh & can frighten me a bit.!, Ive had a welsh A. 2 exmoors, a newforest, 4 cob types & 3 crossbred natives.I just love ponies, they are cute, naughty, fairly easy to look after & cheaper to keep than horses.!

I've ridden dozens, when I used to help out at a riding school in my youth I was the one who got all the naughty ponies to ride as I'm only 5ft (and back then weighed about 7 stone, sadly no longer!!!!)I used to do cross country on an 11.2 (he was great, I wondeer if I can find the photo!) Hunted a 12.2, best days hunting I've ever had! I had a 15.00 for 18 years, but sometimes found him too much, dressage judges said he was too big for me! When I lost him I moved to a young New Forest filly, who I broke myself. She was great and if life had been kind she would now be 17 and still with me. Sadly she had to be put down at 9 due to acute Cushings which gave her bad laminitus. After 6 months of struggling with it, and her getting lamer and more in pain I had to make the horrble decision. The vets had never seen such a young case, and couldnt help her. I now have a 14h welsh X angloarab who was my daughters loan pony when she was 11 and the pony Foxy was 4. She went back to her owner and returned to me (as a gift from her lovely owner) when I lost Pip, the new forest. Fox is now 18 and I've had her 7 years and sadly she too has developed Cushings, but hers is controlled by medication. She has also strained a tendon so is on box rest. She is a feisty, grumpy, opinionated little moo, who can be angelic, but can buck like a fiend. Luckily she isn't too bad on box rest!

hi angelalain, what great memories you have of you ponies.! the grey pony in the picture above was my 13.3hh newforest, she also had cushings & laminitus & in the end she was stabled full time & ridden everyday, she was quite happy as long as she had plenty of hay.! starvation paddock was not an option as she would stand & kick the gate. sadly she died of a heart attack while I was riding her, she was 19 & I thought she would be around for a few more years, such a shock to lose them isnt it.hope foxy gets better soon.

I have owned two ponies, one, Pip was bred at the rare breeds farm I worked on at the time and was always going to be mine (she's an Exmoor in case you've not seen the hundreds of photos of her I have up lol) and the second was a little black pikey horse who looked like a shire who was shrunk in the wash lol he got to a grand 13.2 in the end I think and was more bombproof than a bomb proof thing (and also a little slow.... but he was a boy so has to be forgiven for this lol)

I have always had ponies, and they have all been welsh cobs and as I stand at the great height of.......5" 2" why would I want to have anything large?, and all my ponies have competed against the big uns and faired very well. Please dont get me wrong there are some beautiful horses out there and I admire them immensely. Is there anyone aware that there is an organization called "The pony Riders Association of Great Britain ", it's only open to adults who ride ponies, and they have great shows all over G.B, hopefully its still going..................

I have always had ponies until i thought one day i wanted bigger & better, Oh boy was i taught a lesson... I bought a 6yr old 16hh TB within 6mths he was 17hh. Riding him was fine until i started dressage training in my lessons, He took exception and threw me off & once he learned he could do that i was off more than i was ever on. A battered confidence & a broken wrist later, i sent him away to be sold. Lucky for me i still had my 13.1hh speedy pony, although a little disgruntled at being pushed aside has since forgiven me. Im a lightweight 5'2 and will never underestimate the power of the ponies again.

I never grew out of ponies and am pleased I haven't, I am 5 foot and weigh 7 stone. I own a 13.1 Welsh section C who is the perfect size for me and too much of a handful, at times, for a child. My first pony at 14 yrs was a handsome dapple grey 13.3 New forest gelding, I am 45 years now and loaned a 11.2 Welsh section A a few years ago before I bought Pepsi. I don't care if people think I should be riding a horse, I am perfectly happy having fun on my pony !
