My horses have become really ill with what the vet says is Streptoccus Zooepidemicus, they have had 10 days of Norodine and bute but they still have very large abcesses under there jaw which are obviousley very sore. I have been giving them organic apple cider vinegar in there water along with a broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals to support the immune system, is there anything else I can give them to rid the abcesses? I have had the bioenergetics hair testing done and have a remedy which I am using to treat all 7 horses, 5 of them have it so far! |

It's been seven day's since your post so my hope is they have already opened. Had a terrible time with strangles Jan 09 to April 09 with a horse rescue I volunteer for Aprox. 40+ horses were affected, all reacting differently. Some of the horses produced abcesses that could be encouraged to pop by using heat packs, a few of the horses however required an additional visit from the vet to lance them, while the majority of the horses infected drained without any assistance at all, just picking off the scabs so they could continue to drain. |

yes they have all opened now and it was awful! the vet said it wasn't strangles but a flu virus(from the same family as strangles) where there lymph glands swell and turn to abcesses?! just as i thought they were all over it and on the road to recovery..my 5 month old foal has now developed the dreaded lump! I think i will try the heat pack on him, thank you :-) I've never had poorly horses like this before, it's just awful to see....must remind myself never to let anyone's pony have a place to stay as you do for friends!! |

Hi
It won't be a flu virus from the same family as strangles because strangles is a bacterial infection and not viral! Personally I don't like using antibiotics on cases - best to support the immune system with herbs or homeopathy and let natural immunity sort it out. You can bathe the abscesses too to encourage them to burst.
Best wishes
