| What we are doing? New Zealand has very little holiday accommodation with facilities suitable for families who have children with either intellectual or physical disabilities. We want to provide the most amazingly fantastic holiday experience for these families by converting an area in our home into a disability friendly, family accommodation unit. We would really love to give these kids a great time and an opportunity to broaden their horizons. So what's so special about this? The special thing about our accommodation is that it comes with its very own pony, to pat, feed, ride and love for the whole visit. Tobo is a little Welsh pony who loves carrots and apples and is not beyond helping himself if he gets the chance! He is just the right size for any child to ride and we will help with riding Tobo on a lead rope. If they don't want to ride, then there are plenty of other things for them to do. There's helping to milk our house cow, Milka, or just patting or feeding her and her calf (due shortly). Or they can go into the chicken coop and pick up a just laid egg to have for breakfast... maybe with a glass of fresh farm milk. Then there is the small animal enclosure with the goats, bunnies and ducks to feed or pat. Or maybe making cheese or bread might fit the bill. Pop into the greenhouse and collect salad leaves and other garden fresh vegetables for your lunch. All of the facilities will be arranged to be readily accessible for children with disabilities...even the riding! We want this to be the holiday that every child remembers and wants to come back to again and again. This campaign will enable us to ensure that all the facilities are exactly what is needed to guarantee this and have us up and running by Christmas. If we don't reach our funding target then we are still committed to making this happen....but it will take a lot longer. And what happens to the money? We have been working really hard on getting everything ready and are doing as much as we can ourselves but there's still a lot that we need professionals for! All of the money raised in this campaign will be used to pay for the alteration and building costs and for the work needed to make the outdoor areas disability accessible and child friendly. As an example the disability accessible bathroom alone will cost at least $10,000! We also need to pave access to some of the activities so that they are wheelchair accessible. Why holidays with a pony? The idea of accommodation with a pony came from the fund-raising we are doing with FRDI (the Federation for Riding for the Disabled International). Children, especially those with disabilities, love contact with animals, and riding for children with disabilities has been shown to make a big difference in their confidence. You just have to look at their smiles to know.
