Hi, I've owned Hardy (12 year old Cleveland X gelding) for 2 years. He was very lethargic when I bought him & hadn't had any flu / tetanus vacs, so I had his blood tested along with the relevant flu/tet course. The test revealed that he was anaemic, so he had Collovet & something else (can't think what it was!!) & his following blood test came back normal. Nothing really changed though so I presumed it was just his nature. However, over the last couple of months he's been getting a very runny nose after even very mild exercise, so I had more blood taken during his routine booster visit. This time it came back as him having had a viral infection, leaving him with a low white blood cell count. He's back on Collovet & I'm waiting for the other medicine to arrive. I'm concerned that both times I've had him tested, there's been something wrong!!! Not sure if he's been 'not quite right' straight after his tests last year & has had to wait all this time for something to be done - is there something I should be giving him or doing throughout the year to help him? What could be causing these problems? He's routinely wormed, etc. Any advice / suggestions gratefully received! Thanks, Sue.

Hi Sue If his immune system is low then there are 2 options. One is from Global Herbs called Immuplus that boosts the immune system. The other is Anti-B - another herbal product from Ellen Collinson that boosts immunity and can be used during active infections. A runny nose could be allergy-related at this time of year too? Hi I was really amazed to find someone else with a horse with blood problems my horse is at the moment on b12 plus an iron supplement and other vitamins from the vet as he was very lethargic and also sweating for no reason. His next blood test is in 10 days time.

Hi, HorseVet: Thank you very much for your reply - Hardy's still taking his prescribed medicines, but I'll definitely be looking into the herbal options after this treatment & discussions with his vet. Brilliant to have a 'natural / herbal' point of view :) Patricia: How long has your horse had problems with his blood? Any ideas as to what's been the cause? Please keep me informed of your progress - would be really interested. Hardy will be finishing his medications on Thursday & has to have another blood test about a week after. Will let you know what happens!

hi Rommaldy I bought Paddy a 3 year old Irish Cob in May and felt right from the start that for a young horse he was very slow and lacking in energy but was told hes just a ploddy type. He became increasingly slow almost to the stage of not wanting to move at all and then he started sweating for no reason so I called my vet. Paddy has now had his bloods taken twice he is on a course of B12 injections plus I am adding Feratonee Syrup to his feeds which contains copper, cobalt folic acid ,and sorbitol. on his last visit the vet said he had a viral infection which is causing anemia his next blood test is next Wednesday when I hope he will be well on the mend. Will let you know how we are getting on.

Hi Rommaldy how is your horse now. Just to let you Know Paddys last blood count came back almost back to normal so the vet thinks it was just a virus that he has worked through his system and hopefully I will have no more problems.

Hi Patricia, That's great news! Has Paddy perked up? Have you noticed a difference in him? I was really happy when Hardy's test came back 'normal' last year & was expecting a big burst of energy or something, but I'm still waiting!! :D I spoke to Hardy's vet last week & he said to leave the blood tests until this week - he's going to call when he's over this way. Will let you know as soon as I hear anything, although his eyes & nose are still runny so I'm not convinced it's all sorted.

Hi, Bloods taken again on Friday - vet called Saturday to say there'd been no change :( He gave Hardy a HUGE vitamin injection when he took the blood & also gave me some more Collovet. We're now starting on HB formula to see if that makes a difference (it's what he responded to last year) & the vet has advised that I change his feed to Top Spec (from Alfa A) to see if that helps. He said there are tests he could do if I wanted to try & find the cause, but we may never actually know what's wrong & I don't want to put him through anything unless I have to. Will give this a go & see what happens. Tried riding him Saturday & he just wasn't interested ...... wish I knew how to help him!!!!

Hi, my Hackney pony some years ago suddenly went flat on me with no energy and no will to do anything, I gave him seaweed in his feed as I thought he was anemic, his gums were very pale, the vet suggested Red Cell, together the difference was wonderful, over the years I have kept him on seaweed once a day in his feed and if he gets a little down I give him a course of Red Cell, this works for him. I do quite a bit of driving with him.
