I would love some advice on helping my mare who's in season. I hacked her out yesterday with our gelding and she was very sluggish and felt high behind. Then we met up with another gelding and she started swishing her tail, winking, bucking, going slow, then speeding up, then slow again-really blocking my legs. I tried her behind, then in front to see which would settle her but unfortunately despite some moments of calm we managed to kick my friends horse and later someones car!!! I do need to work her at the moment so I thought I would long rein her. I'll also give her a session of Equine Touch which I know will help. But any other advice, whatever you or anyone else can think of would be most gratefully received!!! |

There are various herbal products that can help with marish problems. I tend to use Global Herbs and Ellen Collinson's preparations as I know they use good quality herbs and not the cheapest rubbish that others might favour. There are homeopathic options too that a homeopathic vet will be able to help identify.
Other than that you can wait for the hormones to calm down and tread carefully at certain times of the cycle!!
Best wishes

Yes I had forgotten about Ellen Collinson, thanks for reminding me- she does some very good preparations which I've used in the past with another horse. |

Hi, A friend of mine uses regumate from the vet as her mare is very mareish to say the least! She does lots of competitions this time of year and it seems to do the trick. Might be worth a look into.x |

Thanks- yes I used Regumate on my other mare last year because she wasn't coming out of her season and it seemed to do the trick. I just wanted to try something a bit more natural this time. She's on the sixth day of a herbal product from Trinity Consultants and she seems much more relaxed- so fingers crossed!! But I'm still interested to know what other people have used with success. |

My mare never used to be grumpy in the slightest even when in season, but now she is older she gets in a grump when in season and you cant brush her tummy... oh no, she gives you a look! hehe.
my aunt is a homeopathist and she gave us Sepia to put in her feed. i also use this for myself.
if you feed it to them (just one little tablet in their feed, they are teeeeeeny tablets and pure natural) around their time of season, then i find it did take the edge off of her mood.
the vet said about putting a marble inside and that helps. im kind of putting off giving her more supplements for it (she has enough already) im going to see how she goes this year on the sepia.
its a shame i dont have the money or time to put her in foal because that would be the ultimate fix. thats why they get grumpy, because they get to maturity and they would have had foals by now. its a shame. pepper would be an amazing mummy. |

Hey Flicka, we have a wonderful lady over here who makes natural oils and lotions for all sorts of things, and despite the small bottles, are very cost effective. I have already used several of her products with great success. One product in particular you might find useful is her "Moody Mare Oil". I'm sure she'd be happy to post overseas. Just a thought. Check her site :) http://www.scnaturalhorse.com/ http://www.scnaturalhorse.com/ |

Thanks, I think I'll try something more natural this year, like the homeopathy or oils-to be honest I'm starting to question giving all these supplements to my horses. |
