Love the tips and advice, I always get nervous before a ride, and I don't know why. I am fine once we get going. I find talking to my horse, seems to work for both of us, also I enjoy giving them a cuddle, my ones love a fuss around the ears. It always make me feel calm and relaxed, and the horse's enjoy it too. |

Nice idea, horsymum. I often suggest that people tell their horse what they love about them, what's special, why they chose them etc etc. It helps to take the rider's mind off things and creates loving, positive thoughts going to the horse. http://www.enjoyriding.com |

I have a lot of confidence issues. I had a horse that reared and spun with me. She was new to me at the time. I ended up sellling her as I couldn't ride her after I fell off. I bought a stubby ploddy mare that was used to carrying children and novices. She was slow but had a wonderful attitude. She really helped me regain my confidence as she really needed me to work her. That was 2 yrs ago. I sold her on to a novice rider who is getting to grips with her confidence. I am pleased to say she is doing well.
I still have huge issues with confidence but it's a lot less thanks to my plod. I also have good friends to thank who have all helped me get out to ride my new horse. Alot of ground work helps bond with your horse too.
I also use Bach rescue remedy if I feel really jittery.
Once I am on then I am fine. I ride with one or two people at the moment. I am building my confidence up and bond to ride out alone. It's been 3 months now and I still can't do it. I know that I will get there one day soon.
I try to be as relaxed and happy as I can. I have a laugh with my friend which helps. |

I find singing takes the nerves away from a situation that I'm not feeling very confident about and helps me concentrate without over thinking things! like the dreaded "what if..." sing your heart out! |

These tips are great, I love the idea of singing, although I am tone deaf so not sure it would work with me! But still great advice as by singing it would relax and distract you. |

Wow, a lot of budding opera singers here! Singing is good - as long as you sing something cheerful (no dirges) - because it induces a more upbeat mood. However, it doesn't necessarily regulate your breathing, and breathing is key to keeping calm. So practise Calming Breathing whenever possible because this will calm you and your horse. The most important thing is to do what works for you. Keep smiling, Caroline :) http://www.enjoyriding.com |

Singing definately helps me to - It seems to help my horse remain calm as well - once it even sounded like he was joining in!!! Did I read somewhere that horses hum to each other in the wild while trekking??? |
