We have always tied to string! and never ever will change.. i was driving into work one day and saw a float pulled over to the side of the road the man jumped out looking very panicked.. i pulled over to help him. he had two horses on, but one had gone down, and was choking itself. it was tied to the ring and he couldnt untie it.. i ran back to my car and thankfully had a pocket knife managed to cut the rope.. Im not saying he wouldn't have gone down being tied to string but at least it could have broke.. |

Yep, I would never tie directly to the ring and now won't even use string unless I've cut through part of it and in the lorry we use safety, quick release ropes. Have you ever tried to untie a rope that a horse has pulled on-as Kibby says it's really hard to undo as the knot has tightened. Thank goodness you had a knife. We've discussed this topic a while ago after my horse flipped over backwards in the trailer-thought you might like to take a look-I've included the link below. http://www.trotontv.com/community/showforum/951/headcollar-safety.html |

Balers twine at all times never direct to the ring! I have a smart pony who has proved many times balers twine snaps when needed and so do well oiled leather headcollars (I don't travel a horse in a nylon...ever!) |

You can also get safety ties to tie the lead rope to, these will come undone as they are velcro (but equally take a bit of force so the horse wont just wander off/untie themselves).

Also forgot to say I would never tie to the ring especially in the horse box, it could lead to the horse getting seriously hurt. |
