A month ago one of my clients made a gloomy prediction that she thought there would be a lack of hay and straw in England this year. This would push up prices and as a consequence there would be a lot of people who couldn't afford to keep their horses any longer. :( We've found that we had half the haylage crop that we got last year and so have had to buy more in. What's it like in your area? Is there a crisis? And what can be done about it?

Think your friend may be right with her prediction. From what I've seen it has been so dry, the crops haven't grown as well as they could have or would normally, plus a lot of the horses fields are becoming sandy starvation paddocks and need additional haylage! Half the crop is a lot less :-( We need lots of rain, in fact I thought it was meant to be thunder storms a week ago, but it didn't happen.

we have no hay in our area, our yard found it really hard all winter to find some and we all ended up on hayledge for a while :/ atm they are unable to find a supplier of small bale hay so are getting in big bales and splitting them up, thankfully my mare is out at grass so we do need feed hay, but it looks like it might be a hard winter again :( and with the straw we have moved onto shavings so not really a problem xD

We got about 30 big round bale's of haylage off 2 of our field's a few week's ago, hope to get another cut of hay off the same field's late August, it's started to rain now so I hope it doesn't forget to stop, the last few yrs we lost all our crop due to the bad weather, we did manage to get about 16 big bale's haylage last year. So thankfully thing's are going well so far.....

Our farmers crop their own hay, haylege and straw and got 4 big fields of each which was about 45 big round bales from each big field which should supply all 3 farms the family run over winter :)
