Hi Unfortunately during the icy weather my horse fell on hard ground and injured around his hock area which became hot and swollen and caused slight lameness. He had to be laid off hunting and rested for a while in his box. It was then drained-had lots of fluid in it and injected. It improved for a while and then the swelling returned. My vet said it was now a bog spavin and he doesn't want to interfere with the joint anymore and he should be fine with it for the job of a hunter. I just wondered if there were any suggestions for things that I could do to help stop this developing into anything more serious from exercise, to supplements or complementary therapies? |

One of my previous horses had bog spavin. I gave him Cortaflex just to provide any support I could to the joint, and kept an eye on it. Didn't seem to cause him any problems. I think your vet is doing the right thing by not interfering with the joint anymore as your horse could get all sorts of infections etc. Have fun hunting! |

We use technyflex powder, magnetic raps and poultices after a hard ride, like a showjumping day or xc.. http://www.technyflex.com/equine |

ask your vet, it is a possibility that your horse could have surgery... expensive may be worth it tho |

Grenville has bone spavin in both hocks and our vet is in two minds about tildren or steroid injections. Also i feed cortaflex but it is expensive at £85 for a big tub and i have been told NAF superflex is pretty much the same but a lot cheaper. Ask your vet what he think would be the best treatment for your horse. |

Maybe try a magnetic band, you could put it on overnight. |

I don't want him to have any more surgery or injections. My vet said to get him back into work but unfortunately he's had another injury :( |

Hi
Don't forget herbal options or homeopathic ones too. Global Herbs do good products to support joints. You don't mention if x-rays have been taken to see if there is something more sinister going on after the injury?
Best wishes
