Have just been given the tip that really cheap margaine makes a fantastic horse antiseptic, that treats anything from fly bites to ringworm. Anyone else heard of this?

Honey is brill, my vets recommend it, never tried or heard of marge! wouldn't it be oily, greasy?? Honey draws out infection/oedema by osmosis. It washes off easily too. If you had honey & marge, it begins to sound like a horse sandwich haha!

my horse has got a nasty bite at the moment but am wary of using honey because of the attraction of flies. have been using Vaseline (another recommendation) but as that is not antiseptic rather a barrier am unsure how to go forward. Help!

Aloe vera is good. I have some aloe vera gel which I use on cuts etc and I can mix it with essential oils for different problems. The trainer I used to work for kept some plants in her conservatory and used the raw material from inside the leaf so obviously much better than anything you get off the shelf. She gave me a plant to take home but unfortunately my green fingers let me down :(

Vasaline and tea tree oil makesa a good antiseptic barrier cream for cuts scrapes and bumps, cleans the area using the tea tree, which also helps keep flies at bay, and the vasaline is a good barrier ointment and pretty cheap

Margarine is not antiseptic and may even set up a reaction. I'm not a fan of vaseline on an open wound - it's petroleum jelly! People are given gloves to fill up their car so I don't think vaseline is ideal. There are loads of antiseptic creams on the market. If you prefer something more natural Global Herbs do various creams, Aloe vera etc Best wishes HorseVet
